Selçuk Castle, also known as Ayasuluk Castle, has stood for over 1,500 years, perched atop the hill of Ayasuluk near Ephesus in İzmir. Due to its strategic location, this well-preserved Byzantine fortress was expanded and strengthened during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The castle’s imposing presence, with its 15 towers and surrounding 1.5 km of rubble stone city walls, is a testament to its historical significance in the region.

The castle’s main entrance, constructed in the 6th century AD using stones from former Roman houses, still greets visitors today. Inside the citadel, remnants of a church built over a former Byzantine structure can be found, alongside a small mosque and several large cisterns that once stored water for the castle’s inhabitants. The hill has also served as a necropolis, evidenced by the discovery of sub-Mycenaean graves dating back to the 14th century BC.
