Panionion, located on the northern slopes of Mykale Mountain (Samson Mountain), opposite Samos Island, is situated in the modern-day Güzelçamlı area, on the western slopes of Otomatik Hill. This historic site was central to the Ionian Federation of city-states, established around 700 BC.
Delegates from these city-states would gather at Panionion to make pivotal decisions regarding the federation’s future, including its expansion, strategic policies, and wartime strategies..

In the 1957-58 excavations led by Professor Gerhard Kleiner of Frankfurt University, an 11-stepped structure carved into a rock was uncovered. This structure, identified as a theater, confirmed  Panionion’s role as a significant cultural and religious center, dedicated to Poseidon Helikonios. The site also hosted the Panionion festivities, which were significant events in the ancient Ionian calendar.

The Ionians, who resided between modern-day Foça and Didim, were renowned for their advanced civilization and the establishment of twelve influential city-states. These city-states included Phokia (Foça), Ephesus (Selçuk), Klazomenea (near Urla), Priene (Güllübahçe), Erythrai (Çeşme Ildırı), Myus (Avşar Köyü), Labedos (Doğanbey), Miletos (Balat Köyü), Teos (Seferihisar), Samos (Samos Island), Kolophon (Değirmendere), and Chios (Chios Island). İzmir, known as Symirma at the time, joined the federation later.

The Panionion Festival, or Panegyris, is considered a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, with its origins dating back to the establishment of the first temple in the 8th century BC. As Herodotus, often referred to as the father of history, remarked during his visit, Panionion is “the most beautiful place above the earth and beneath the sky where the sun meets the sea and history with nature.”

Today, Panionion remains a captivating historical site, attracting thousands of national and international visitors each year, allowing them to experience the magic of ancient civilizations through the eyes of Herodotus.
