The Öküz Mehmet Pasha Caravanserai, located near the Kuşadası Pier, is a significant historical structure built in 1618 by order of the grand vizier Öküz Mehmet Pasha. This remarkable building, resembling a small inner castle, is a testament to the architectural prowess of the Ottoman period.

The caravanserai features a rectangular courtyard, enclosed by thick, high walls, providing a sense of security and seclusion. The courtyard is surrounded by two-story, porched indoor spaces, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. The construction utilized rubble stones and repurposed materials, adding to the structure’s historical significance. At the apex of the building, a triangular-tipped dentil further enhances its castle-like appearance.

Inside, the spacious courtyards are lined with rooms, once used to accommodate travelers and their goods. Over the centuries, the caravanserai has undergone various restorations, carefully preserving its original form and grandeur. Two sets of stairs, located at the northwest and southeast corners of the building, lead to the rear sections of the structure, offering a glimpse into the thoughtful design and functionality of this historical site.

The entrance to the caravanserai is on the northern side, marked by a marble arched doorway, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore this well-preserved piece of Ottoman heritage.
