The Ancient City of Claros: A Sacred Oracle Center
The Temple of Apollo in Claros
Located 32 kilometers north of Kuşadası and just 2 kilometers north of the ancient harbor city of Notion, Claros was a renowned center of prophecy in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was famous for its “Temple of Apollo,” which served as a significant oracle site attracting visitors from across the ancient world. The temple is also mentioned in the epic tales of Homer, further adding to its historical importance.
Constructed in the 2nd century BC, the square propylon served as the main entrance to the sacred area for those arriving from Notion or by sea. The propylon, built in the Doric order, stands on a three-stepped krepis and serves as a gateway to the holy site. The Temple of Apollo, surrounded by columns and located in a sacred grove, was constructed in the Doric style, measuring 26 by 40 meters. The temple became fully operational and highly frequented during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, solidifying its status as a major religious center.
Inscriptions on the columns and walls of the semi-circular exedra reveal the names of delegations from across Anatolia and Eastern Europe who came to consult the oracle of Apollo. The inscriptions also mention the children and youth who sang hymns to honor the god Apollo. Claros, with its blend of history, mythology, and religious significance, remains an intriguing site for those interested in the ancient world’s spiritual practices and architectural marvels.
